The Lower Athabasca Region is part of the Athabasca Heartland, which contains most of the last true unprotected wilderness in Alberta. The Athabasca Heartland contains Alberta Oil Sands — the world's largest energy project — as well as logging, mining and conventional oil and gas operations. It is one of the most threatened landscapes in Alberta.
For the first time in 10 years, the Alberta government has given the green light to creating new protected wilderness areas in the province. The region that will be affected is the Lower Athabasca, where oil sands developments threaten one of Alberta’s last strongholds of ecological integrity.
