CPAWS NWT Conservation

CPAWS-NWT envisions an NWT:

with a network of protected areas that will conserve our natural and cultural values for current and future generations;
where land management policies give high priority to the protection of natural and cultural values, and
that allows for carefully planned areas of well-managed and sustainable resource development.

To these ends, we work to:

establish new protected areas;
safeguard existing protected areas, and
promote ecologically sound resource management in areas between protected areas.

Conservation in the NWT

Our territory holds globally-significant conservation opportunities. With only 42,800 residents in over 1.1 million square kilometres, the NWT is home to vast tracts of ecologically intact and culturally important lands, much of it in the boreal forest.

There are still opportunities to protect these lands before they are changed forever by industrial development and by climate change. Public support for conservation across Canada has never been higher, and governments' ability to deliver on protecting our natural and cultural values is strong.

With a vision of a territory-wide network of protected areas guiding us, CPAWS-NWT is working with NWT residents, governments, communities and organizations to conserve the land, water and wildlife of the NWT for current and future generations.
